People leave trash wherever they go – and as countries get richer and their populations grow – the amount of waste they leave behind continues to grow as well. In past years, developed countries in the West have become more environmentally conscious thanks to the “Green Revolution” and invest a considerable amount of resources into the management of waste. However, despite the robust growth of South Africa’s economy, its waste management industry and that of most other developing countries lags behind their developed country peers. With funding from the Umsobomvu Youth Fund, entrepreneurs Langa Sangoni (35) and Tim Mohulatsi (32) started Apple Green Holdings in 2007 to fill this gap by providing large corporations and municipalities with an innovative, holistic, end-to-end waste management solution.
