The South African film industry, which is based mainly in Cape Town and Johannesburg, generates R518 million a year. The industry has a strong skills base boasting more than 1000 registered producers and outstanding post-production facilities. However, compared to the film industries in Nigeria, India and the US which each produce and average of 1500, 800, and 400 films per year respectively, South Africa’s average production of only 6 films per year is staggeringly low.
New Ground Distribution (NGD) aim to utilise the skills learned from these successful film distribution models in the currently unexplored South African market by combining breakthrough marketing and distribution innovations, to promote and sell South African films to the South African mass market (the LSM 4-7 market) at a price that will make it compelling for consumers to buy (between R20-60).
