Shona McDonald - Shonaquip
Shona McDonald works on the premise “that a wheelchair is not just a form of transport and a chair is not just a place to sit”. After searching unsuccessfully for a custom-fit wheelchair for her daughter – who was born with cerebral palsy – Shona decided to design and manufacture her own. That was in 1984. Today, her company Shonaquip has branches in four provinces in South Africa, employs 52 employees (many of whom are disabled) and provides over 3,000 wheelchairs a year to individuals in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Recognized as an expert in the manufacture and design of disability equipment by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health in South Africa, Shona is changing the landscape for people with disabilities in Africa and offering a smoother ride to a better quality of life.
